NASA’s Parker Solar Probe has successfully completed its closest-ever approach to the Sun, achieving a historic milestone in space exploration, the agency announced. The probe remains in stable condition following its passage through the Sun’s outer atmosphere, known as the corona, on December 24, 2024. The spacecraft approached within 6.1 million kilometers of the Sun’s surface, marking the shortest distance any human-made object has traveled to the star.

NASA confirmed the probe’s safety through a beacon tone received by the operations team at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory in Maryland late Thursday night. Designed to withstand extreme conditions, the Parker Solar Probe experienced temperatures reaching 982 degrees Celsius during its high-speed approach, which saw it traveling at approximately 692,000 kilometers per hour. The mission aims to enhance understanding of solar phenomena, including the heating of the corona and the origins of the solar wind.

NASA stated that data collected from this latest maneuver will help scientists investigate how solar material is heated to millions of degrees and how energetic particles accelerate to near light speed. Such insights could improve forecasting of space weather events that have the potential to impact satellites, communications, and power systems on Earth. The Parker Solar Probe is scheduled to transmit detailed telemetry data about its condition and observations on January 1, 2025.

This information will be analyzed to assess the spacecraft’s performance and further refine predictions about solar activity. Launched in 2018, the probe has employed a series of gravity-assist flybys of Venus to gradually decrease its orbital distance from the Sun. This strategy has enabled it to penetrate deeper into the corona with each successive orbit, providing unprecedented measurements of the star’s outer layers.

NASA’s mission represents a groundbreaking effort to study the Sun’s dynamics and offers insights that may reshape scientific understanding of solar processes. The Parker Solar Probe continues its journey, with additional close approaches planned in the coming years as part of its ongoing exploration. – By MENA Newswire News Desk.
